Sarah Anderson, Owner and President

Sarah has over 20 years of experience in the insurance industry. She founded Anderson Thornton Consultants based on the guiding principles of quality, responsiveness, and integrity, in an effort to revolutionize the employee benefits world with exceptional service, communication, and trust.

Sarah’s focus is to support businesses in crafting strategies for benefits and human resources that empower employers to turn their benefits expenses into an asset, creating value and building wealth.

Patrick Thornton, CEO

Patrick has multifaceted experience within the health care system. After graduating from Utah State University, Patrick worked as a Medicare Auditor, then as Assistant Controller and later as Chief Financial Officer of a Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) Hospital.

Patrick is an expert in employee benefits, self-funded plans, and contract development. His background in finance and the inner workings of hospitals give him unique perspective. He is skilled in custom-building benefit plans to help employers reach their goals. He has mitigated millions of dollars in claims, protecting both member and employer assets.

As CEO of Anderson Thornton Consultants, Patrick aims to contract with businesses, medical providers, administrators to shift the balance of power within the healthcare delivery system so that business owners and their employees have more options and more control over their own health.

Pat Thornton, CFO

Pat has seen the financial impact of employee benefits and insurance throughout his long career in corporate finance. After graduating from the University of Alabama as a CPA, Pat began his career as an audit and tax manager with Price Waterhouse Coopers, then spent more than 25 years as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of O’Neal Steel in Birmingham, Alabama.

While there, he was responsible for managing employee benefits, property and casualty insurance, and banking relationships, and he was also key in evaluating businesses for mergers and acquisitions. Pat’s vast experience gives him an intricate understanding of corporate and business finance, adding a unique perspective to our team.

Kara Charlton, Director of Operations

Kara has over 10 years of experience in the financial services industry, working in banking operations, loss prevention and reconciliation. She also worked in property and casualty insurance and consumer lending contracting before joining the Anderson Thornton team.

Kara is the primary point of contact for the servicing of our clients’ benefits and accounts. She not only oversees the day-to-day office operations, but she also applies her keen attention to detail to the enrollment and implementation of new and renewal business. Kara is an expert in compliance, especially as it relates to the Affordable Care Act.

Steve Layland, Director of Managed Care

Steve offers our clients more than 25 years of successful, in-depth experience in development, marketing, and operations, with many of those years focused on integrated health care delivery system for HMOs and PPOs. Steve has worked successfully to develop health plans, ensuring exceptional care by implementing quality assurance outcomes. He has marketed and expanded health care plans across multiple states. He is an expert at negotiating risk contracts for various employers, health care providers, and hospital organizations.

One of his successful past projects was developing a start-up health plan, converting seven medical clinics into a full integrated staff model HMO with multiple products. That health plan increased its membership from 70 to 15,000 in the first year.  Using his unique perspective, skill sets, and professional background, Steve is well-suited to his role in the active development of our innovative health care models.
